− About EOE−

“Essence of Evolution” is a research-based approach, specializing in evolutionary developmental processes based on the essence of martial arts and physical movement/exercise. EOE’s founder, Master. Su Dong-Chen, is an eminent authority of martial arts.

The Martial Arts Philosophy developed by Master. Su has as its cornerstone the study of physical phenomenon as they actually manifest, a kind of philosophical positivism. This is based upon and tested through actual fighting experience, as well as Master Su’s mastery in his background arts, the Chinese Internal Martial Arts styles Xing Yi Quan, Ba Gua Zhang, and Tai Ji Quan. Mr. Su is also well-versed in Southern and Northern, Shaolin Kung-fu, and the various martial arts and fighting sports of Japan and the West. He has specialized in developing and carrying out experimental proof of technical principles, as well as the research and application of tactical thought. For more information about Mr. Su and his philosophy, please refer to his biography.

In looking beyond the boundaries of any style or any school, as a result of unrelenting quest for evolution, and through research of the essence of martial arts, Mr. Su’s martial arts philosophy gradually formulated a uniform system of theory: “Consistent Technique” in defense, striking, and throwing/joint locking; and a comprehensive relationship of the principles “Point, Line, Cross, and Spiral.

Necessary Distance:Long Range → Middle Range → Short Range
Evolution of Technique:Point & Line Technique → Crossing Technique → Spiral Technique
Progression of Fighting Method:Single Choice between Offense and Defense → Offense and Defense United → Multiplication of Offense and Defense
Deployment of Tactics:Direct Attack and Defense → Indirect Attack and Defense → Control of Throwing/Grappling

Essence = The fundamental principle and ultimate tendency
of = The basic principle which should be practiced and gradually developed
Evolution= The law of change and its inevitable development

Everyone who undertakes the study of martial arts must begin with a certain style or school of Combative Sport or Martial Art.

There are systems based on striking, throwing, and grappling, as well as Combination systems and Sport Combat systems. There are many sport and competition oriented styles such as boxing, wrestling, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, etc., in addition to the “mixed martial arts” systems of the professional sport fighting sphere, as in K-1, Ultimate Fighting Championship, Pride, etc. Of course these fighting competitions are inclined toward performance, as they are spectator events.

Without the existence of sportive competition (games), there is no “mixed martial arts.” A Game involves technical competition and development which is regulated by fixed rules, and as such represents a marginal, limited pursuit.

The classification of Martial Arts styles begins with national/state identification, and is then divided into countless styles by area, lineage, school, etc. For example, the use of the Japanese sword (Nihon-To) alone has hundreds of styles devoted to it. Add to that styles specializing in throwing and grappling techniques, as well as empty-handed styles, and there are literally thousands of styles. Each style or school has prepared a normative philosophy which dominates their opinion and thought in the subject of martial arts. From these schools and styles many branches are born, and any one style can have countless offshoots of gyms, schools, classes, associations, etc. Therefore, it is difficult if not impossible to be versed in the study of all schools, even within one style.

A style or school is but a part of martial arts, and an entrance of study. It is the choice of everyone studying martial arts to remain satisfied with the level of entrance, i.e. the level of style and branch, or to pursue development beyond style into the total world of martial arts. Imitation and reproduction of style and dependence on school represent the pursuit of Form, while research of Essence enables transcendence of style and graduation from school

The purpose of Essence of Evolution is in research into the technical principles and tactical law, beyond the form of school and restrictions of style. A depth of understanding beyond outer form results in Evolution, the conversion of technical methods and tactical deployment.
